Rhona obtained her BA (Honours) from Concordia University before locating to Vancouver and graduating from UBC with a Bachelor of Laws in 1989. After articling with a full service firm in New Westminster, BC, Rhona founded her own law practice in divorce & family law, civil litigation, personal injury, wills & real estate law. Rhona has appeared in the BC Supreme Court Family and Civil divisions and in the BC Provincial Court, Family, Small Claims and Criminal divisions.
Rhona was accredited as a Family Law Mediator by the Law Society of BC in 1996. In 1999, Rhona joined a small group of family lawyers and mental health professionals to establish the Collaborative Divorce Association of Vancouver. Rhona is a passionate advocate for dispute resolution in a dignified, respectful, cost-effective and practical manner.
In 2001, Rhona decided to focus her practice on non-litigation family law, including collaborative law, mediation and negotiated settlements. She began training lawyers, mental health professionals and financial specialists in collaborative practice through the Continuing Legal Education Society of BC. She created and presented a family law course for the Vancouver School Board's Continuing Education Department. Rhona has provided presentations, trainings and workshops to small and large groups.
Rhona was the Supervisory Lawyer to the Battered Women's Support Services Legal Advocate program for 10 years. She has trained legal advocates through the Law Foundation of BC and has presented on various family law topics for the Legal Services Society of BC. Rhona currently volunteers at the Rise Women's Legal Centre teaching law school clinicians family law mediation.
In 2004 Rhona began instructing the Law Society of BC's Professional Legal Training Course (the BC Bar admission course for articling students). She taught law students the basics of law practice: law office management, legal ethics, civil litigation, criminal law, family law, creditor's remedies, wills & estates, company, corporate and real estate law. I specialized in updating the family practice, mediation, negotiation, advocacy skills, professional ethics and practice management course materials.
In January 2015, Rhona established Hillcrest Law & Mediation, which is her offering of the very best of her experience and passion as a lawyer, mediator and instructor to the public, the legal profession and to law students. She is pleased to be of service as a mediator, family lawyer, legal consultant or locum, continuing professional development (CPD) presenter and workshop facilitator, legal educator and tutor.
Rhona is an active member of the legal profession and volunteers in her community. Rhona was a director of Vancouver's Metro Theatre and performs annually in the Lawyer Show Fundraiser which is the major fundraiser for Carousel Theatre for Young People and Touchstone Theatre. Rhona enjoys an active family life with her spouse of 30 years and is the very proud mother of two adult daughters. In addition to theatre performance, she enjoys walking, cycling and swimming . She loves to travel, spend time with good friends and is an Okanagan wine enthusiast.
